Abstract

This paper presents a survey of challenges and potentials that arise
throughdigitization in industrial applications. The process of digitization in the industrial
context iscalled Industry 4.0 or Industrie 4.0 to indicate that the related impact can be compared
to theprevious three industrial revolutions beginning at the end of the 18th century. The term
Industrie4.0 has been defined in Germany and has been presented to public at the Hannover
trade fair in2011 for the first time. Main objective of Industrie 4.0 is the development of a smart
factorywith highly automated production process and highest flexibility in order to
producecustomized products at the economic conditions of mass production. In this paper we
provide anoverview of the basic ideas of Industrie 4.0 technology including discussions of a
sampleapplication and our contribution to the development of components for the future
smartcomponents.
