Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to predict student success based on the
Grade Point Average (GPA) and the length of study using the Classification and Regression
Tree (CART). The study used eight explanatory variables: gender, region of origin, age,
admission status, parental education, parental occupation, high school status and parental
pay. The response variables were the GPA and the length of study. Results showed that the
variables with the largest effects on the response variable GPA for students of industrial
engineering and informatics departments were region of origin and parental pay. The
variable with the largest effects on the response variable length of study for students of
industrial engineering and informatics departments were parental occupation.
